With
over 350 approved grape varieties planted, from Alto Adige in the north to Puglia
in the south, Italy provides a style of wine suited for almost every palate.
The following selections are a window into the diverse landscape of culture,
heritage, and culinary tradition that makes Italy so electric.
Beat
the summer heat with a cool, crisp glass of white! You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better wine
for the job than the 2013 Feudi di
San Gregorio, Falanghina, Campania, Italy ($13 per glass). Intense aromas
of fresh-squeezed lime accompanied by hints of green apple and white flowers
lead to bright notes of citrus fruit and minerals on the palate. If you enjoy
the easy going nature of Pinot Grigio, you’ll be enticed by the approachability
of Falanghina. This delicious style of wine is a great match for our Ahi Tuna
Tartare.
From
the picturesque windswept hills of Tuscany, a region known as the industry
leader for Sangiovese production, comes the 2012 Fattoria di Felsina, Berardenga, Chianti Classico, Tuscany,
Italy ($57 per bottle). Deep ruby in color with subtle hints of dried
flowers and baking spice, the wine delivers tremendous fruit with perfectly
balanced tannin. Try this with our Double
Cut Colorado Lamb Chops with Mint Chimichurri.
In
the realm of Chardonnay production Italy is not generally one of the first
places that come to mind; however, of those producers that have embraced the
variety, they are creating a beautiful expression of what is truly the apex of
white grapes. The 2009 Jermann, Were
Dreams, Chardonnay, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy ($131 per bottle)
offers bountiful aromas of baked apple and ripe stone fruit on the nose. On the
palate the wine over-delivers with complex notes of ripe tangerine followed by
subtle vanilla hints. It pairs
beautifully with our Wild Alaskan Salmon.
