Summer's over, outdoor activities
are done. Let's get autumnal! The following wines will warm the chilliest of
nights and offer a wide range of pairing options as the autumn season begins to
unfold.
Riesling could easily be considered
a sommelier’s best friend. With a wide range of styles, the wines offer amazing
versatility when it comes to food pairings. The 2012 Dr.
Pauly-Bergweiler, Noble House, Riesling, Mosel, Germany ($8 per glass) is
packed with notes of baked apple and citrus followed by a hint of white
peach. These lush, fruit driven flavors evoke the pure essence of the Mosel
Valley, a region steeped in tradition with the reputation for producing some of
the finest Riesling on earth. This delicious wine pairs perfectly with our
Block Island Swordfish Strip.
Spicy aromas full of clove and
cinnamon make Cabernet Franc perfectly suited for fall weather. 2011
Lang & Reed, Cabernet Franc, North Coast, California ($55 per bottle (Joe’s
Las Vegas) $28 per half bottle (Joe’s Chicago)) begins with a hint of
bright red berries and evolves into layers of savory spice and licorice. With
the grapes being sourced from several different vineyards in the North Coast
wine growing region of California, Lang & Reed has captured the
"typicity" of Cabernet Franc in California. This is a great match
with our Petite Filet Mignon and a side of Baked Butternut Squash.
A truly unique style of wine from
the Valpolicella region in Verona, 2008 Masi Costasera Amarone
Classico, Valpolicella, Italy ($135 per bottle) is a traditional blend
of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. The grapes are semi-dried on bamboo racks
to concentrate fruit and build sugar levels in a method called “passito”,
creating a wine with rich notes of dried plum, baked fruit, and cocoa. This is
an adventurous pairing with our Char-Broiled Beef Tenderloin Sandwich.
Wine Tip: The
above 3 varietals will all complement a Thanksgiving feast! Use the above
selections as a guide for your turkey-day pairings.
