Light the fire, wrap yourself in something warm, and pour
the wine! The holiday season is upon us
- a time for celebrating, spending time with family and friends, and reflecting
on the passing year. Here are some of
the season’s best selections for doing so:
Crémant de Bourgogne is one of the premier
sparkling wine-producing regions of France. While not as lauded as its northern neighbor,
Champagne, the wines are made in a similar style at a fraction of the price. NV Simonnet-Febvre, Brut Rosé, Crémant de Bourgogne ($52 per bottle)
is made from 100% Pinot Noir, providing tremendous notes of fresh raspberry and
soft undertones of red currant. This light, fruity sparkler is suitable for
every type of occasion!
Despite its recent spike in popularity, Pinot Noir has been
the pinnacle winemaking grape in Oregon for nearly five decades. 2011
Penner-Ash, Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon ($100 per bottle) has
been leading the charge, creating its identity with consistency. Loaded with black cherry and black tea on the
nose, the palate provides the perfect balance of fruit and acidity. Treat
yourself to our Petite Filet & Jumbo Alaskan King Crab matched with this
delicious wine.
The movie ‘Sideways’
proved to be a challenge for producers of Merlot, with Paul Giamatti expressing
his unsavory feelings for the varietal.
One producer in Napa Valley, however, has embraced the challenge of
reintroducing this extremely noble grape to the spotlight. The 2010 Shafer, Merlot, Napa Valley,
California ($115 per bottle) is packed with delicious layers of black
plum, dark cherry, sage, and a touch of mint. When paired with our Signature
Bone-In Filet, it’s easy to see why Shafer is an industry leader in California.
Wine Tip:
Remember, all Champagne is sparkling wine *but* not all sparkling wine is
Champagne. If you’re looking for the elegance of French bubbles without the
high prices of Champagne, look for ‘Crémant’
on the list. This term is often associated with exceptional quality and value.
Cheers!
